Update: Video — Mark Steyn: Left wants to denormalize, dehumanize opponents
James Hodgkinson (killed by police), Trump-hating Bernie supporter, attempted a massacre of a GOP Congressional Baseball Team practicing for a planned charity game. It was fortunate that House Majority Whip Rep. Steve Scalise ( R-La) was at the practice game, his security detail of Capital Police were there. Their armed response, both were wounded, prevented a massacre. The DailyMail reported that Hodgkinson fired up to 100 rounds.
House majority whip Steve Scalise’s condition has been downgraded to critical.
Michigan Rep. Mike Bishop earlier described how one man – thought to be part of Scalise’s Capitol Police protection detail – stood his ground to return fire as the congressmen and at least one of their children dove for cover in a dugout and Scalise dragged himself across the field after being hit, leaving a trail of blood behind him. Flashback: Climate of Hate
Just hours after Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot in Tucson, Ariz. in 2011 by Jared Loughner, an insane man, that the left media began a campaign against the “climate of hate” allegedly fostered by Sarah Palin. There was no evidence that Loughner, a schizophrenic, was inspired by Palin.
Clarence Dupnik, the Democrat sheriff of Pima County after Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot:
“We need to do some soul-searching. It’s the vitriolic rhetoric that we hear day in and day out from people in the radio business and some people in the TV business. When you look at unbalanced people, how they respond to the vitriol that comes out of certain mouths about tearing down the government, the anger, the hatred, the bigotry that goes on in this country is getting to be outrageous.”
The Present: The Left reacts to Scalise shooting with predictable viciousness.
In the wake of the shooting, lots of people on the Internet lost their minds. Several progressives even went out of their way to suggest the victims deserved to get shot because they have the wrong views on gun control, or Obamacare, or Donald Trump. Here are some of the most insane reactions to the Congressional baseball shooting so far.
Newsweek seemed to think the most important fact about the shooting is that one of the victims supported Donald Trump. The Federalist
Markos Moulitsas, founder of Daily Kos and Vox, responded today to a year old tweet from Sen. Rand Paul who was quoting Judge Napolitano: “Why do we have a Second Amendment? It’s not to shoot deer. It’s to shoot at the government when it becomes tyrannical.”
Vilification and dehumanizing discourse to condoning violence. The Left is a nonstop hate fest from Berkeley to a baseball field in Virginia to New York.
James Hodgkinson did this shooting and he did it for ideological reasons. He asked Rep. Ron DeSantis , “Are those Republicans or Democrats out there practicing?”
All political goals and discourse that promotes and uses force should be condemned!
Political debate and institutions are the means through which a civilized society addresses its differences in order to avoid violence and “war.” The collective punishment inherent in tit for tat, guilt-by-association battles is not “winning;” America loses when terrible methods are mainstreamed and accepted. That being said, do I believe that thoughtful liberals ought to consider the potential consequences of beyond-the-pale arguments, such as the oft-repeated charge that Republicans actively want to kill people through their policies? I do.
Some of the vilification and dehumanizing discourse that surround our politics is out of hand, and perhaps the out-of-power party is typically more prone to such unhinged shouting. Each side must self-police, and work to reign in its own worst rhetorical excesses, even — or especially — when tensions run high around difficult debates. I also firmly believe that the Left must forcefully stamp out the growing belief among some in their coalition that “hateful” words or votes are akin to violence, and therefore violence is an acceptable response. This concept is taking root on college campuses and among various strains of so-called “social justice warriors.” It normalizes the idea of force and physical coercion as a permissible response to offense or grievance. Liberals must grapple with his problem. TownHall
Hodgkinson is from Illinois, and it is not known why he was in Washington. But he seems to have traveled with an armory of sorts, which must have been in his car’s trunk, parked nearby. Now, why would a deranged rabid progressive bring a lot of ammunition and at least one gun to the nation’s capital? Doesn’t it seem reasonable to wonder if this was just the first opportunity he got to enact violence against a target the Left agrees is evil: the GOP?
So we can conclude that a rabid progressive, perhaps inspired by the level of hate and the sanctioning of violence against President Trump in art and in the media, found a chance to act out his hatred in a big way. AmericanThinker
