Former city comptroller Ahmad arrested in Pakistan

jail bar photoAmer Ahmad, former Mayor Rahm Emanuel aid, was arrested at an airport in Lahore,  Pakistan, when he was on the run to avoid a prison sentence.  Authorities confiscated $176,000, 17,000 in Euros and a fake passport.   While working for Democratic Treasurer Kevin Boyce (Ohio House of Representatives),  Ahmad steered state business to his financial adviser in exchange for more than $500,000 in kickbacks. Amer Ahmad plead guilty in December to bribery, conspiracy to commit bribery, money laundering, and wire fraud.

Ahmed was under investigation 5 months before Emanuel hired him in Chicago.  Amer Ahmed was indicted weeks after he resigned as Emanuel’s hand-picked comptroller.   He was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment and $3.2 million in restitution.

In 2012, Ahmad was selected as one of Crain’s Chicago Business’40 Under 40” list-makers.  Ahmed kept a diary on his computer, parts of which are online at the SunTimes website.
