Hurricane Ophelia Creates Phenomenon In Britain’s Skies

Hurricane Ophelia – Ireland and the United Kingdom

With Tropical Storm Ophelia’s transition to Hurricane Ophelia on Wednesday, 2017 became the first year in more than a century — and only the fourth on record — in which 10 Atlantic storms in a row reached hurricane strength. NYTimes

Britain was cast in an eerie Martian gloom as Saharan dust whipped across the Atlantic by Hurricane Ophelia shrouded the sun turning skies over the nation red.

The storm is believed to have picked up dust from North Africa and debris from forest fires in Spain and Portugal as it travelled towards the UK.

Skies over London have been covered in a murky orange haze as the desert dust mixes with clouds, offering residents in the capital a stark contrast to the grey that usually greets them at this time of year.  DailyMail
