Saudi Arabia Agrees To Allow Women To Drive For The First Time

It is about the economy.

Vision 2030 to reform the economy, spearheaded by deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, a key part of the reform effort is to increase women’s participation in the workforce to 30% from 22%.

Saudi Arabia announced on Tuesday that it would allow women to drive, overturning a longstanding policy that has become a global symbol of the repression of women in the ultraconservative kingdom.

The change, which will not happen immediately, was announced on state television and in a simultaneous media event in Washington. It highlights the damage that the policy has done to the kingdom’s international reputation and its hopes for a public relations benefit from the reform.

Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Islam, is a Muslim monarchy ruled according to Shariah law. Saudi officials and clerics have provided numerous explanations for the ban over the years.

Some said that it was inappropriate in Saudi culture for women to drive, or that male drivers would not know how to handle women in cars next to them. Others argued that allowing women to drive would lead to promiscuity and the collapse of the Saudi family. One cleric claimed — with no evidence — that driving harmed women’s ovaries. NYTimes

Saudi cleric suspended for saying women can’t drive due to brain shrinkage

A Saudi cleric who said women should not drive because their brains shrink to a quarter the size of a man’s when they go shopping has been banned from preaching, state television said.

Saad al-Hijri was suspended from all religious activity after advising against allowing women to drive in a speech that contained comments “diminishing human value,” the broadcaster quoted a spokesman for the governor of Asir province as saying. JPost

Diabetes-Related Amputations Up By A Shocking 31 Percent in California – And San Diego More Than Twice That

In the U.S. foot and leg amputations for diabetics have been declining since the mid-1990s.   Even as rates of the disease were rising in the United States, fewer foot and leg amputations were being performed on people with diabetes.

“It’s impossible to pinpoint a specific reason for the drop in major amputations. We do know that better foot and ankle treatment is a part of it though,” stated Dr. Phinit Phisitkul, an assistant clinical professor at the University of Iowa department of orthopedics and rehabilitation. MedicalExpress

Between 2009 and 2014 the CDC noticed an increase of 27 percent nationally in the rate of amputations among people with diabetes.  Previously, the numbers had been declining.

In California the numbers are shocking  – diabetic amputation increased statewide more than 31%.  There has been an increase by 66.4% in San Diego County of diabetic amputations.

Clinicians are amputating more toes, legs, ankles and feet of patients with diabetes in California – and San Diego County in particular – in a “shocking” trend that has mystified diabetes experts here and across the country.

Statewide, lower-limb amputations increased by more than 31 percent from 2010 to 2016 when adjusted for population change. In San Diego County, the increase was more than twice that: 66.4 percent.

Losing a foot, ankle or especially a leg robs patients of their independence, hampers their ability to walk and makes them more vulnerable to infection. It also can shorten their lives.

This trend, which inewsource documented with state hospital data, is one physicians, surgeons and public health officials are at a loss to explain, though many have theories.

Edward Gregg of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the California numbers are worrisome.

Public health officials consider amputations to be an important indicator of a region’s diabetes care because diabetes and its complications can be prevented, said Gregg, chief of epidemiology and statistics for the CDC’s Division of Diabetes Translation.

“If we see it going down, then it’s a good sign, because so many aspects of good diabetes care are in theory affected. And when you see it going up, that’s a concern,” he said…

The increase also could be attributed to inadequate attention to diagnosing and managing the disease in some populations, he said, adding that in some populations, there may be less attention to diagnosing and managing the disease.

But those reasons together don’t explain the stark increase in such a short period of time, he said.

The CDC and other experts are stumped at the increase of diabetic amputations in California.  There are many theories – aging population, more people being diagnosed, managing the disease in some populations…

Lack of covered treatment

Jonathan Labovitz, a Pomona foot and ankle surgeon and podiatry researcher affiliated with the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research, said some of the blame likely can be traced to 2009 when the state stopped paying for outpatient podiatry services for patients under Medi-Cal, California’s health program for the poor.

State health officials confirmed that Medi-Cal excluded podiatry services as of July 1, 2009 because of the state’s budget shortfall, but said podiatry services are covered when provided by primary care physicians, federally qualified health centers, rural health centers and tribal clinics, and are covered by some Medi-Cal managed care plans. State officials declined to comment on whether the change resulted in an increase in amputations.

Hundreds of Thousands Gather In The Streets Of Ukraine To Celebrate The Protestant Reformation And To Praise The Name Of Jesus

2017 marks the 500th anniversary of the beginning of the Protestant Reformation – in the USA on October 31st.

On October 31st, 1517, Luther posted his 95 Theses at Wittenberg.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko signed a decree recognizing the anniversary of the Reformation – the contribution of Protestant churches and the religious organizations’ role in Ukrainian history.

The streets of Kiev filled with songs of praise and thanks as 500,000 evangelical, Ukrainian Christians gathered to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. (Photo Credit: Flickr)

“Many traveled from all four provinces there just to be a part of that celebration, to thank God for the freedom to worship, to thank God for the freedom to preach the Gospel in their country, and to celebrate God’s faithfulness,” Sergey Rakhuba with Mission Eurasia told Mission Network News.

The gathering came after Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko signed an order recognizing the anniversary of the reformation.

“It was so exciting to see on the screen of my computer where I was watching young people with so much joy. They glorify God in the midst of their capital. This was the same place where they were protesting just a few years ago fighting for their freedom. But, also, this is the place where many years ago, Communists would force people to demonstrate and propagate Socialism, Atheism, Communism, and other ‘isms’ in their country.”

Rakhuba says young people are the key to spreading Protestantism in Ukraine.

“That’s what Mission Eurasia is doing, working with the next generation, those who take the baton, those who get into the generational gap and take the Gospel to their communities,” he says.

Young people aren’t just spreading the gospel in Ukraine, now they’re exporting missionaries throughout the world.

“I just talked to a group of young people. They just came to this celebration from their mission trip to Mongolia in China — young Ukrainians who felt like the Holy Spirit was leading them to take the Gospel to … Mongolia where they reached thousands of young people through summer camps!”

Ukraine may still be in the middle of a war with Russia, but it is growing leaps and bounds spiritually.

“Ukraine is still in the midst of war. Eastern Ukraine and territories are still occupied by Russian or pro-Russian separatists. Crimea was annexed by Russia. So yes, Ukraine is struggling politically, economically, but Ukraine is striving today spiritually, pleading to God to bless that nation,” Rakhuba says.  CBN

Thousands Of Haitians Find ‘Mexican dream’

Tijuana’s growing economy needs laborers and has found ones with a good work ethic.  It’s the “Mexican dream” for many Haitians.  Why not “the Mexican dream” for Mexicans?

Jose Luis Millan found a new crop of star employees at an upscale Tijuana car wash where customers cross the border from the U.S. to pay up to $950 to have their prized possessions steamed and scrubbed for hours. They’re never late, always hustle and come in on days off to learn new skills, traits that he says make them a model for their Mexican counterparts.

They are among several thousand Haitians who came to Mexico’s northwest corner hoping to cross the border before the U.S. abruptly closed its doors last year. The Mexican government has welcomed them with visas that help them fill the need for labor in Tijuana’s growing economy.

In a country whose population is 1 percent black, Tijuana’s Haitians stand out. They share tight living quarters, sending much of their meager wages to support family in Haiti. Haitians earn far less than they would in the United States but enough to forsake the risk of getting deported by heading north.

Two new Haitian restaurants downtown serve dishes with mangoes and mashed plantains. Dozens of Haitian children attend public schools. Factories that export to the U.S. recruit Haitians, who can also be found waiting tables and worshipping at congregations that added services in Creole.

“It’s the Mexican dream for many of them, a sense that they belong,” Millan said. “Mexico has given them opportunity. Mexico has opened up and let them achieve their dreams.”

Millan, who lived in the Los Angeles area for two decades until he was forced to leave last year for employing dozens of people illegally at his party planning company, sees parallels to Mexicans in the U.S. Their teamwork sets an example. Some customers ask for them.

Haitians, he says, “fight hard, fight strong, and they don’t stop.” WashingtonPost

Why then are Mexicans crossing into the U.S.?

Illegal activities and welfare.

Just because illegal aliens are not legally entitled to benefits from state and federal government does not mean they do not receive them.

Children born in the United States are considered U.S. citizens. Illegal aliens that have given birth to a U.S. citizen, the families are eligible for welfare benefits.  Buy forged documents or steal a U.S. social security number that person could sign up for welfare benefits.

Illegal immigrant households receive an average of $5,692 in federal welfare benefits every year, far more than the average “native” American household, at $4,431, according to a new report [2016] on the cost of immigration released Monday.

The Center for Immigration Studies, in an analysis of federal cost figures, found that all immigrant-headed households — legal and illegal — receive an average of $6,241 in welfare,..

The greater consumption of welfare dollars by immigrants can be explained in large part by their lower level of education and larger number of children compared to natives. Over 24 percent of immigrant households are headed by a high school dropout, compared to just 8 percent of native households. In addition, 13 percent of immigrant households have three or more children, vs. just 6 percent of native households.  WashingtonExaminer

David Inserra – research associate with the Heritage Foundation:

  • The typical household headed by a college-educated person paid $54,089 in taxes while receiving just $24,839 in government benefits.

  • The average American household headed by a person without a high school diploma paid just $11,469 in taxes while receiving $46,582 in government benefits.

These numbers are not insignificant, he points out, because the average illegal immigrant would fall on the “tax consumer” side of the equation. In fact, he found that half of illegal immigrant households are headed by people with less than a high school diploma, while one-quarter have only a high school diploma.

he NCPA review states:

In 2010, the typical illegal immigrant household received $24,721 in government benefits but paid just over $10,000 in taxes — an annual benefit of more than $14,000 per household. Illegal immigrants not only receive the benefits of government services (like fire and police protection), but their children receive public education. Additionally, children of illegal immigrants that are born in the United States are eligible for the full spread of government welfare benefits, including Social Security and Medicare. Sudanese Gunman Burst Into Tennessee Church And Opened Fire

One woman was killed dead and seven others injured after Emanuel Kidega Samson, 25, opened fire at Burnette Chapel Church of Christ in Antioch, a town just south of Nashville, Tenn.

A spokesman for Vanderbilt University Medical Center said two of the victims are critically injured, with four others in stable condition, The Tennessean reported. All six patients are adults – three men and three women.   DailyMail

Tennesse has the death penalty.

Melanie Smith, 39, killed by Samson

Police have identified the masked gunman behind the fatal mass shooting at a Nashville church on Sunday as Emanuel Kidega Samson.

Melanie Crow Smith, 39, of Smyrna, died and another six were injured when Samson, 25, opened fire at Burnette Chapel Church of Christ, 30 minutes southeast of Nashville in Antioch, as services let out at 11.15am.

The attack only stopped thanks to the brave actions of an armed church usher.

Robert Engle, 22, identified by friends on social media, had ran up to confront Samson and despite being repeatedly pistol-whipped in the head, was able to force Samson to shoot himself in the leg.

‘There was a significant struggle between the two,’ he said. ‘During the struggle, the gunman shot himself, probably not intentionally.’

Engle then went to his car, grabbed his pistol, and returned to hold the shooter at gunpoint.   ‘This particular church member has a handgun carry permit,’ Aaron added. ‘The usher went to his vehicle, got his gun, came back inside and made sure the gunman didn’t make any more movements until the police department arrived.’

The shooter’s condition is not life-threatening and he is under heavy police guard at Vanderbilt Medical Center, Aaron said.

Family members and church parishioners said pastor Joey Spann and his wife Peggy Spann were also both shot. Married mother-of-two Smith died at the scene. DailyMail

Samson is a bodybuilder who attended high school in Tennessee and is originally from Karthoum, Sudan, according screenshots of the suspect’s Facebook page obtained by The Daily Caller News Foundation before the account was taken down. Police say he is a legal resident and came to the U.S. in the 1990s.  DailyCaller

Fossil Footprints Found On Greek island Of Crete Challenge Current Theories Of Human Evolution, But Not Genesis

“So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth,
and they stopped building the city.” Genesis 11:8

The idea that “modern” humans evolved in Africa and spread out from there is from evolution theory.

The fossilized human footprints found in Crete are older than the human-like prints found in Africa.

The ancient footprints discovered in Crete.

Newly discovered human-like footprints from Crete may put the established narrative of early human evolution to the test. The footprints are approximately 5.7 million years old and were made at a time when previous research puts our ancestors in Africa — with ape-like feet.

Ever since the discovery of fossils of Australopithecus in South and East Africa during the middle years of the 20th century, the origin of the human lineage has been thought to lie in Africa. More recent fossil discoveries in the same region, including the iconic 3.7 million year old Laetoli footprints from Tanzania which show human-like feet and upright locomotion, have cemented the idea that hominins (early members of the human lineage) not only originated in Africa but remained isolated there for several million years before dispersing to Europe and Asia. The discovery of approximately 5.7 million year old human-like footprints from Crete, published online this week by an international team of researchers, overthrows this simple picture and suggests a more complex reality.

Human feet have a very distinctive shape, different from all other land animals. The combination of a long sole, five short forward-pointing toes without claws, and a hallux (“big toe”) that is larger than the other toes, is unique. The feet of our closest relatives, the great apes, look more like a human hand with a thumb-like hallux that sticks out to the side. Archaeology newsnetwork

The Crete footprints dispel a theory defining a different species as an ancestor of hominins.

The footprints discovered in Crete are not the oldest proof of humans, but they are the oldest sign of humans discovered outside of Africa. Though theories of when humans migrated from Africa vary, the new discovery predates all these theories by several million years.

The discovery in Crete also dispelled a theory defining a different species as an ancestor of hominins. Ardipithecus Ramidus had ape-like feet, but evolutionists believe its descendants eventually learned to walk upright, leading to the development of bipedal humans. Scientists believed Ardipithecus Ramidus was the ancestor of later hominins. Since the newly discovered footprints predate Ardipithecus Ramidus by at least one million years, they seem to indicate an entirely different line of development for the human species, in which Ardipithecus Ramidus is not an ancestor. BreakingNewsIsrael

‘This discovery challenges the established narrative of early human evolution head-on and is likely to generate a lot of debate. Whether the human origins research community will accept fossil footprints as conclusive evidence of the presence of hominins in the Miocene of Crete remains to be seen,’ says Per Ahlberg. archaeology newsnetwork

San Diego, California Is Dousing Its Streets With Bleach to Contain Hepatitis A Outbreak

It seems as if the homeless have congregated in the downtown area.  Why has San Diego allowed this to happen?

Hepatitis A is a liver infection caused by the Hepatitis A virus (HAV). Hepatitis A is highly contagious. It is usually transmitted by the fecal-oral route, either through person-to-person contact or consumption of contaminated food or water.  CDC

Earlier this month, California’s San Diego County declared a public health emergency over a rampant hepatitis An outbreak that has killed 16 people and sent 300 others to the hospital. Now, in an effort to curb the spread of the disease, the city of San Diego has started to douse its streets with bleach, Lindsey Bever reports for the Washington Post.

The majority of people affected by the outbreak are “are homeless and/or illicit drug users,” according to a statement from San Diego County’s Health and Human Services Agency. The disease is being spread through “contact with a fecally contaminated environment,” the statement adds. It is believed that a lack of public restroom access in areas where homeless populations congregate is in part to blame.

To combat the disease, workers in San Diego began washing downtown streets with diluted bleach earlier this week. As Merrit Kennedy of NPR reports, the process involves spraying bleach onto hazardous materials like needles and human waste, waiting ten minutes, removing the materials, spraying the area again and then pressure-washing it with water.

Workers are expected to finish the street cleaning process by Friday. After that, the city will continue to spray the streets with bleach every two weeks. Smithsonian

Jump in homeless numbers

This year San Diego County cited a 68 percent increase in the number of people living on the street since 2007, amounting to a total of 5,621. Unsheltered chronically homeless individuals, or those living outdoors for more than a year who also have mental or physical disabilities, numbered 1,750 — a 148 percent spike from a decade ago.

At the city level, Downtown San Diego alone saw a homeless population jump of 27 percent just between 2016 and 2017. The entire city saw a spike of 10 percent from 2016, although the current number of people living on the streets was 2 percent less than what it was in 2012. Seventy-seven percent of those interviewed in 2017 became homeless while living in San Diego. NextCity

Estimated 70% of homeless are from San Diego

The Regional Task Force on the Homeless has since estimated that 70 percent of San Diego’s unsheltered homeless population became homeless in San Diego and that just 24 percent became homeless elsewhere before coming here.

Dolores Diaz, who leads the Task Force, has noted that migration within San Diego – particularly, to downtown San Diego – is far more common.  VoiceofSanDiego

Looking at what was spent in 2015 and 2016 there seems to be a  thriving homeless advocacy industry.

Homeless spending data for the fiscal years 2015 and 2016. The data represents a range of costs associated with homelessness, including rental assistance, transitional housing, health services and clean-up costs.

  • Jurisdictions in San Diego County have collectively spent more than $630 million in the past two fiscal years to combat homelessness. The county provides just over half the funds, with the San Diego Housing Commission, which serves the City of San Diego, accounting for a little less than half. The other, roughly two percent of the funding, comes from individual cities throughout the county.
  • Housing initiatives account for $535 million, or almost 85 percent, of the total spending. Rental assistance for homeless and at-risk populations make up about 90 percent of housing funds, with the rest going to programs that include transitional housing, emergency shelters, and permanent supportive housing.
  • Homeless Services represent almost $100 million, or 15 percent, of the total cost. About $50 million of that goes to fund mental health services, and $40 million goes to fund drug and alcohol programs. SanDiegoNewsDaily

‘Fraud’: Mainstream Polls Use 29% More Democrats Than Republicans

The manipulation of polls during the 2016 election continues.

Most of the top political polls that got the 2016 presidential race dead wrong are continuing to use a flawed methodology in rating President Trump’s approval ratings that favors Democrats, women and younger voters, according to a new analysis.

The report shows that the mainstream polls oversample an average of 29 percent more Democrats than Republicans and the results skew anti-Trump.

And, said the report from Bombthrowers.com, one outfit, the Economist, used 58 percent more Democrats than Republicans in a recent poll on Trump’s approval ratings.

Simpson called the practice “fraud.”

He also noted that the random sample used by many pollsters includes too many liberals and even illegal immigrants, and said that choosing “likely voters” is the best gauge. McLaughlin and Rasmussen use likely voters and show Trump’s approval rating higher than the others.  WashingtonExaminer

UK Student Jailed For Falsely Accusing Taxi Driver Of Sexual Assault

22-year-old Sophie Pointon,  plead guilty to perverting the course of justice and was sentenced to 16 months. Pointon had hopes of becoming a police officer.

Judge Christopher Batty told her: “Your malicious complaint has done a huge disservice to those seeking justice through the police and courts.”

A criminology student has been jailed after falsely claiming a taxi driver sexually assaulted her after he refused to accept a £10 note covered in kebab oil.

Sophie Pointon, 22, told police officers she had been molested in the back of the cab she had been picked up in after a night out.

The student rang police in the early hours of April 22, this year, then continued the lie by signing a statement giving an account of the attack, in Leeds, West Yorks.

Leeds Crown Court heard the driver, a father-of-five, was tracked down and kept in custody for six hours. He was also unable to work for four weeks as a result of the claim.

Kate Bisset, prosecuting, said the driver was interviewed and said he could recall Pointon being “extremely drunk” when she got into his car holding a kebab.

He said Pointon threw a £10 note at him when they reached the Hyde Park area but he refused to accept it as it was covered in oil from the kebab.

The driver said Pointon then became abusive and ran around the car opening doors. The prosecutor said: “He did not think much of it at the time because such incident with people who are intoxicated are not unusual.”…

A recording of a conversation between the driver and a phone operator at his taxi office supported his account.

The court heard a GPS tracker fitted to the car also revealed Pointon’s description of the taxi journey to be untrue. TelegraphUK

Video: ‘Beating up fascists is good,’ college students say

“Beating up fascists is good.”

what is most troubling is that these anti-free speech beliefs and tactics are not simply embraced by a radical fringe. A recent Brookings Institute study found that a majority of students believe that disrupting speakers to silence them is “acceptable” and one in five students (19%) endorse the use of violence to silence an “offensive” speaker. A plurality of students believe that “hate speech” is not covered by the First Amendment, despite Supreme Court precedent establishing otherwise.  DailyWire

Campus Reform

As acts of political violence in America increase in regularity, a new poll shows that many college students have no problem with it.

Of those surveyed, a startling 19 percent claimed to support the use of violence to silence speakers they find offensive, the same perspective held by the increasingly violent Antifa groups around the country.

Wanting to see what college students in Washington, D.C. thought of Antifa, Campus Reform took to the campus of American University to ask students their opinion of the violent leftist organization recently labeled a domestic terror organization by the Department of Homeland Security.

Immediately, the students made it clear that they had no problem with the controversial group. CampusReform

US Establishes Permanent Military Base In Israel

A first.

For the first time in history, the United States on Monday established an official, permanent military base in Israel: an air defense base in the heart of the Negev desert.

Dozens of US Air Force soldiers will call home the new base, located inside the Israeli Air Force’s Mashabim Air Base, west of the towns of Dimona and Yerucham.

Brig. Gen. Tzvika Haimovitch, head of the IAF’s Aerial Defense Command, announced the establishment of the installation on Monday evening.

“It’s nothing short of historic,” he said. It demonstrates the “years-old alliance between the United States and the State of Israel.” …

It is located not far from a US military radar installation east of Dimona that tracks ballistic missiles once they are launched and provides details on their flight paths to defense systems.

US military forces are routinely based in Israel, both for joint exercises and for routine cooperation with the IDF, but Haimovitch described the new base as a meaningful change.

“We established an American base in the State of Israel, in the Israel Defense Forces, for the first time, with an American flag,” he said. TimesOfIsrael
