A Good Samaritan who interrupted a violent attack at a University of British Columbia dormitory is crediting his martial arts training for his quick actions that led to the suspect’s arrest.

Adam Casey, an engineering student at the school, said he ran up the stairs after witnesses ran out of the Salish House residence on Tuesday looking for help.

Witnesses said they saw a male student holding down a young woman with a knife to her throat. Her neck was partially cut when they ran through the open door.

The assault occurred in Salish House, a UBC dormitory.
“I tried to get his hands off of her neck but he was holding quite tightly,” Casey told CTV News.

“I had to go to him and put him in a chokehold.”
Casey said he acted without thinking, something he credits to years of martial arts training. ctv

Jacob’s Biblical Spotted Sheep Heading To Israel

Update to previous story

Let me pass through all your flock today, removing from there all the speckled and spotted sheep, and all the brown ones among the lambs, and the spotted and speckled among the goats; and these shall be my wages.
Genesis 30:32

Jacob received a flock of a speckled and spotted sheep, the brown lambs, as well as spotted and speckled goats, as wages from Laban.

A rare breed of sheep said to be descended from Jacob’s flock is to be shepherded to Israel with the help of a Canadian Jewish  couple, Jenna and Gil Lewinsky, and El Al.

Transferring livestock between countries is strictly regulated by the the World Organization for Animal Health and there are no channels for transferring livestock from Canada to Israel. The complicated process requires a specially outfitted plane to transport the sheep and after the period of quarantine upon arriving, they would need pasture and a barn…

After nearly a year of being turned down by the Israeli Agricultural Ministry, the Israeli Embassy in Canada intervened on behalf of the sheep, and the ministry has decided, for the first time in history, to allow livestock to be imported from Canada.

After a year of being turned down by red tape between the two countries the Gill’s turned to  Rav Amram Vaknin, a mystic rabbi living in southern Israel.

“Rav Vaknin stated that the sheep have a special blessing on them from Jacob in the Bible,” Gil told Breaking Israel News.  “Rav Vaknin stated that the sheep have a special blessing on them from Jacob in the Bible,”

The sheep will be placed in the Golan Heights.

Their ancient birthplace, is uniquely suited for the sheep. According to the Bible, the sheep originated in the fields of Jacob’s father-in-law, Laban. He lived in Padan Aram, Mesopotamia, or what is now Syria, adjacent to the Golan.

Arise, go to Paddan-aram, to the house of Bethuel thy mother’s father; and take thee a wife from thence of the daughters of Lavan thy mother’s brother. Genesis 28:2

“The soil is especially rich in selenium and cobalt,” explained Jenna. “In Canada we needed to give them injections to supplement their food. We won’t need to do that in the Golan.”

Jacob’s Biblical Spotted Sheep To Return To Israel

Update:  Jacob’s Biblical Spotted Sheep Heading To Israel

Let me pass through all your flock today, removing from there all the speckled and spotted sheep, and all the brown ones among the lambs, and the spotted and speckled among the goats; and these shall be my wages.
Genesis 30:32

Jacob received a flock of a speckled and spotted sheep, the brown lambs, as well as spotted and speckled goats, as wages from Laban.

A breed of sheep believed to have been raised by the Biblical forefather Jacob are set to be sent to Israel from Canada in the coming months.

The effort to bring the rare “Jacob Sheep” to the Golan Heights from Canada had been inching along for nearly a year, Jenna and Gil Lewinsky told the Guardian, with the reintroduction of the breed stymied by red tape between the two countries.

Gil and Jenna Lewinsky, a Jewish couple who met in Israel and are now living near Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, claim to have a flock of sheep that descend from the Biblical sheep of the Biblical forefather Jacob. The Lewinskys are attempting to return the sheep, and themselves, to the Land of Israel.

Gil, who cares for the nearly 70 sheep on a farm in Canada, explained the uniqueness of this particular flock. “They are the only sheep breed in the world to produce spots and speckles in offspring,” as described in Genesis 30:32, he explained to Breaking Israel News. Although there are other Jacob Sheep in Canada, the Lewinskys claim to have the largest flock.

According to Gil, Jacob Sheep, “are one of the oldest sheep breeds in the world, with genetics that go back 3,000 years to Laban and Jacob.” In addition to their rare spots and speckles, unlike most sheep breeds, both male and female Jacob Sheep have horns, often more than one pair.

The Lewinskys are currently raising funds to bring their flock of Jacob Sheep to the Golan Heights in northern Israel. They plan to open a Heritage Park as a tourist attraction in Israel to enable people to see the Biblical sheep for themselves. Lewinsky told Breaking Israel News that the planned Heritage Park will have another, loftier purpose. Read more at BreakingIsraelNews

Australia and Canada Impose Visa Ban For Residents Of Ebola-Affected Nations

notallowedOn Tuesday,  Australia stopped issuing visas to people from West Africa countries-Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia.   Canada has now imposed a visas ban to people in Ebola-affected countries.

Canada will stop issuing visas to people from the three West African nations where the Ebola is widespread, the government said on Friday.

The federal citizenship ministry, explaining the move, said in an official document that ‘the introduction or spread of the disease would pose an imminent and severe risk to public health’.

About 5,000 people have died in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone this year in the worst Ebola outbreak on record. Fears rose that the disease could spread beyond the region after a few cases were diagnosed in Spain and the United States.

Canada – which has not reported any cases of Ebola so far – is following in the footsteps of Australia, which on Tuesday became the first rich nation to issue such a ban. The country’s official in charge of the response to Ebola said the move was medically unjustified.

Under the new regulations, which come into force immediately, Canada will not process visa applications from foreign nationals who have been in an Ebola-affected country within the previous three months.

Mohamed Hersi
Mohamed Hersi

Hersi was arrested at Toronto’s Pearson airport in March 2011 as he was about to leave for Cairo. The investigation began when a dry-cleaner found a USB memory stick in Hersi’s security guard uniform that contained a book on bomb-making. An undercover police officer befriended Hersi with the cover story of a fellow Somali-Canadian that wanted to join the terrorist group Al Shabab.

Mohamed Hersi is the first person in Canada to stand trial for attempting to join a foreign group classified as a terrorist organization. Hersi arrived in Canada as a four-year-old refugee with his mother after they fled the Somali civil war. As an adult he said his goal was to live in a Muslim country.

Muskoka Initiative Toronto Conference

Toronto, Canada

Prime Minister Stephen Harper this week hosted a high-profile conference in Toronto to mark the fourth anniversary of the Muskoka Initiative (Child Maternal Health Initiative). It is a global effort to reduce maternal mortality and improve the health of mothers and children in the world’s poorest countries. The Toronto conference theme is “Saving every women, every child.”

UNICEF states that about 29,000 children under the age of five  die every day, mainly from preventable causes. More than 70 per cent of almost 11 million child deaths every year are attributable to six causes: diarrhea, malaria, neonatal infection, pneumonia, preterm delivery, or lack of oxygen at birth.

Simple interventions are a hugely effective tool. One is vaccinations for children under five.  Prime Minister Stephen Harper said vaccinations are “proven to work,” and that they have been “lifesavers” in our society and elsewhere,  in an interview with CBC News. Harper offered advice to those who have their own theories and do not listen to scientific evidence. “Don’t indulge your theories, think of your children and listen to the experts,” he said.

A Canadian Muslim group, The National Council of Canadian Muslims(NCCM) is suing Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper for defamation, alleging his spokesman linked the group to terrorism in January.

It all begin in January after the NCCM asked the Canadian Prime Minister’s office to exclude Rabbi Daniel Korobkin in the official delegation that accompanied Harper to Israel.  Rabbi Daniel Korobkin had hosted anti-Muslim bloggers Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer at an event in Toronto.

The prime minister’s communications director, Jason MacDonald, responded to the NCCM saying:

“We will not take seriously criticism from an organization with documented ties to a terrorist organization such as Hamas.”
