Hungary Leaders Responds To Legal Action From The EU By Sending $476 Million Bill For Border Fence

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban wanted to make it impossible for uninvited guests to cross the border and it appears as though he has succeeded.

Hungary’s 96-mile long, 14-foot tall double-line fence includes several layers of razor-wire capable of delivering electric shocks. The barrier features cameras, heat sensors and loudspeakers ready to tell migrants they’re about to break Hungarian law if they as much as touch the fence.  WorldTribune

Now Hungry wants the EU to pay half the bill for the border-fence.  Good one.

Hungary wants the European Union to pay half the bill for the razor-wired fence it erected in 2015 to keep migrants out, Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s administration announced Thursday.

The fence has virtually erased illegal immigration into Hungary less than two years after it was considered the primary route for migrants attempting to enter the EU. Janos Lazar, Orban’s chief of staff, claims the 400 million euro ($476 million) figure is justified since the fence is “protecting all the citizens of Europe from the flood of illegal migrants.”

“If we talk about European solidarity, then we must also discuss the protection of borders. Solidarity must be applicable there, too,” Lazar said at a press conference. “That burden must also be shared.”…

In Rare Move, UK Blocks EU Council’s Adoption Of Paris Peace Conference Statement

A decisive attempt by Theresa May to correct her government’s earlier mistake with UN Res. 2334, she sent a low-level functionary to the Paris Peace Conference, in which the UK participated as an observer only, declining to add its signature to the Paris Peace Conference final draft statement and now blocking the EU from adopting the statement.

It also seems PM Theresa May understands the importance of trade deals with Trump in a post-Brexit Britain.

Britain prevented the European Union Foreign Affairs Council from adopting the closing statement from the Paris peace conference.

Britain’s action on Monday, reported by Haaretz citing European and Israeli diplomats, followed a day after Britain refused to sign the closing statement at the conference. Britain had sent a low-level diplomat as an observer to indicate its displeasure with the proceedings.

Australia also distanced itself from the closing statement and did not sign it. JTA

Times of London interview

The Brits read what Trump said and implemented it immediately,’ diplomat tells Haaretz.

What did you think of Obama’s approach towards the UN Security Council resolution on Israel just before Christmas?  I think it was terrible. It should have been a veto. I think it was terrible.

Do you think the UK should have vetoed it?

Well, the UK may have another chance to veto if what I’m hearing is true, because you know you have a meeting as you know, this weekend. And there are a lot of bad stories being circulated. The problem I have is that it makes it a tougher deal for me to negotiate because the Palestinians are given so much — even though it’s not legally binding it’s psychologically binding and it makes it much tougher for me to negotiate. You understand that? Because people are giving away chips, they’re giving away all these chips.

And do you think the UK should veto any UN Security Council resolution on Israel put forward this week so that you are in a stronger position to get the right deal for the Middle East?

Well, I’d like to see the UK veto. I think it’d be great if they veto because I’m not sure the United States is gonna veto, amazingly.

German has warned Turkey if it reinstate the death penalty it will kill your chances of joining the EU.  After the images of extreme violence from both the military and the government Turkey still has a chance of joining the EU?

Turkey has been warned by Germany that it will kill its chances of joining the European Union it reinstates the death penalty in the wake of a failed military coup…

However in Berlin today, German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s spokesman said Turkey’s bid on joining the EU would end if Ankara restored the death penalty.

Steffen Seibert told reporters that the EU is a ‘community of values, therefore the institution of the death penalty can only mean that such a country could not be a member.’

For the moment, he says that Germany and other EU countries are watching the internal Turkish debate on whether to institute the death penalty, but that the EU’s position is clear.

‘In the first hours after the failed coup, we witnessed revolting scenes of caprice and revenge against soldiers on the streets. That cannot be accepted.

‘We categorically reject the death penalty and an institution of the death penalty would mean an end to the negotiations to join the EU,’ he added. DailyMail
