Video: NASA Footage Shows What It Was Like To Land On Saturn’s Moon Titan

As NASA’s Saturn-orbiting Cassini spacecraft time draws to an end scientists look back at one of its missions.  The Huygens probe was sent by the European Space Agency along with the Cassini spacecraft.  NASA has shared an amazing video of images taken by the Huygens probe  of Titan, the largest moon of Saturn,

Flat Earth Fallacy

earth_nasaThere seems to be an upsurge in the flat earth movement.

Within days of my conversation with the people about the young man who espoused a flat earth, I had two additional, yet independent, conversations with people having similar concerns about two other Christian young people. However, while the first young man merely talked about a flat earth as an intellectual exercise, these two young men apparently had become convinced that the earth may actually be flat. With three conversations over less than a week, I wondered, “Is there something going on out there?” There had been a few warning signs along the way. During the previous six months I had been asked about the flat earth several times.   One was from the department that handles correspondences and questions directed to Answers in Genesis. It seems that people submit a question about this to Answers in Genesis often enough.

Lack of knowledge of the reasons we know that the earth is spherical.

Most people have not given this question any thought, because they have been taught their entire lives that the earth is spherical, so why worry about it? Consequently, with no idea of the reasons we know that the earth is spherical, most people long ago entered a complacent state of more or less taking someone else’s word for the matter. When someone comes along, such as this young man, who has given this some thought and begins to raise what appear to be simple objections to the earth’s spherical shape, it doesn’t take much to fluster most people.

How people in the ancient world knew the earth is spherical.

Earth’s Shadow

So how did people in the ancient world know that the earth is spherical? The earliest recorded discussion of a spherical earth is from Pythagoras in the sixth century BC. Pythagoras correctly understood that the cause of lunar eclipses is the shadow of the earth falling on the moon. This can happen only when the moon is opposite the sun in our sky, which coincides with full moon. The earth’s shadow is larger than the moon, so we cannot see the entire shadow at once.

However, during a lunar eclipse we see the earth’s shadow creep across the moon. Because the edge of the earth’s shadow always is a portion of a circle, the earth’s shadow must be a circle. If the earth were flat and round, similar to a disk, it could cast a circular shadow, but only for lunar eclipses that occur at midnight.  For a lunar eclipse at sunrise or sunset, the earth’s shadow would be an ellipse, a line, or a rectangle, depending upon how thick the disk was compared to its diameter. However, the earth’s shadow during a lunar eclipse is always a circle, regardless of the time of night when the eclipse occurs. The only shape that consistently has a circular shadow, regardless of its orientation, is a sphere….

Are flat earth people for real?

Are these people who believe in a flat earth for real? It’s hard to say. They could be well-intentioned but seriously misguided people. Or they could be attempting to discredit the Bible and Christianity….

At least some of the people behind this upsurge in the flat earth movement may be lampooning the creation movement. As such, they clearly are no friends of the church; rather, they oppose Christ and His kingdom.

Comets To Swerve Closer To Earth Next Week – Closest Distance In Almost 250 Years

comet-252PGreen comets will zip past Earth next week.  Comet 252P/ LINEAR will zip past the Earth on March 21st.

An emerald-green comet will brush the Earth Monday, followed one day later by a kissing cousin that will swerve closer to the planet than any other comet in nearly 250 years.

The first and bigger of the two comets will be visible Monday to the naked eye in the southern hemisphere, as long as city lights are far away. Stargazers in the United States will probably need only binoculars to see the bigger comet in late March. Scientists, however, are bringing out the big guns. The Hubble Space Telescope, the powerful ground-based Gemini telescopes and others will be trained on the celestial visitors, which will provide an extraordinary close-up of objects usually glimpsed only at a distance.

“This is one for the record books,” says Michael Kelley of the University of Maryland, who’s never heard of two comets approaching close to Earth a day apart. “It’s a fantastic opportunity for professionals to learn more about comets, and if you have a chance to try to find them … it’s a fantastic chance to see part of history as it happens.”

The first member of the pair, known as comet , is a bright green color from the carbon gas it’s puffing out, says the University of Maryland’s Matthew Knight. 252P will slide past Earth at a distance of roughly 3 million miles. That’s well beyond the moon but near enough to put 252P in the top 10 of closest-approaching comets. Detroit Free Press

Apollo 10 Heard Strange Sounds On The Far Side Of The Moon

Apollo_10In 1969, the crew of Apollo 10 were on the far side of the moon, they were out of range of Earthly radio transmissions for about an hour and they heard strange sounds.  The unexplained sounds lasted almost an hour.

“It sounds like, you know, outer space-type music.”

“You hear that? That whistling sound? Whooooooooo!”

“Well, that sure is weird music!”

Apollo astronauts who orbited the moon two months before Neil Armstrong’s famous 1969 landing heard mysterious and unexplainable ‘music’ on its far side, out of the range of Earthly radio transmissions, it has emerged.

Recently unearthed recordings made by NASA of the journey, which took the Apollo 10 capsule around the far side of the moon, show the astronauts reacting with surprise and confusion to an unearthly howling noise in their headsets.

The sound began once the capsule was on an hour-long trip around the far side of the moon, out of the range of any Earth broadcast. At one point the baffled astronauts can be heard discussing whether they should tell NASA command or not. DailyMail

The solar system’s five brightest planets, all visible to the naked eye, are lining up in the evening sky. .

Jupiter, Saturn, Mars, Venus and Mercury should be visible in clear skies just above the western horizon as dusk turns to night each evening this weekend. In the coming weeks, their positions will appear to change slightly as they move along their orbits around the sun. SFGate

A rare celestial show will appear in pre-dawn skies this week.  For the first time in 11 years, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn will be visible at the same time in the sky.

All five planets will can be seen just before dawn at 6.50am ET on Wednesday, January 20. Hold your arm up straight from the moon to the horizon and the five planets should fall along that line. DailyMail

There will be a viewing window between 5.30am and 5.40am (AEDT) on January 20, expanding to an hour between 5:00am and 6:00am February 20.

Dr Duffy suggested finding a clear horizon and a dark sky, which will be easiest outside cities, and to try on more than one morning to get the best view.

Dr Hill said Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn have been visible together since the beginning of the year and will now be joined by Mercury, which is transitioning from an evening to a morning object. ABC AU

NASA’s “Blue Marble”

NASA released an image of the earth that is stunning!

earth_nasa

NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) recently captured a unique view of Earth from the spacecraft’s vantage point in orbit around the moon.

“The image is simply stunning,” said Noah Petro, Deputy Project Scientist for LRO at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. “The image of the Earth evokes the famous ‘Blue Marble’ image taken by Astronaut Harrison Schmitt during Apollo 17, 43 years ago, which also showed Africa prominently in the picture.”

In this composite image we see Earth appear to rise over the lunar horizon from the viewpoint of the spacecraft, with the center of the Earth just off the coast of Liberia (at 4.04 degrees North, 12.44 degrees West). The large tan area in the upper right is the Sahara Desert, and just beyond is Saudi Arabia. The Atlantic and Pacific coasts of South America are visible to the left. On the moon, we get a glimpse of the crater Compton, which is located just beyond the eastern limb of the moon, on the lunar farside. NASA

This Sunday’s Fourth ‘Blood Moon’

Red_MoonA rare celestial event will take place on September 27-28, 2015.  A Harvest supermoon and the fourth ‘blood moon’ of 2014-2015.  The four ‘blood moons’ in 2014-2015 have fallen on Jewish holy days: Passover 2014, Sukkot (Tabernacles) 2014, Passover 2015 and now Sukkot (Tabernacles) 2015.

There is a total eclipse of the moon on the night of September 27-28, 2015. It happens to be the closest supermoon of 2015. It’s the Northern Hemisphere’s Harvest Moon, or full moon nearest the September equinox. It’s the Southern Hemisphere’s first full moon of spring. This September full moon is also called a Blood Moon, because it presents the fourth and final eclipse of a lunar tetrad: four straight total eclipses of the moon, spaced at six lunar months (full moons) apart.  EarthSky

Modern science has focused much of its efforts on looking for mathematical patterns utilizing our modern Gregorian calendar system, but when historians, astronomers, and theologians looked for patterns utilizing the ancient Biblical calendar with key prophetic dates such as Passover, everything changed.

Now, an unprecedented pattern has been discovered. For millennia, a rare celestial event known as the “Blood Moon Tetrad” has coincided with periods of monumental change affecting the Holy Land and ultimately the world. Today, after hundreds of years of absence, this rare celestial event has begun occurring once again. BloodMoonProphecy

“And I will show wonders in the heavens, and in the earth, blood and fire and pillars of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord.” Joel 2:30-31

The current tetrad has high significance for Judaism and Israel. Each blood moon in the tetrad has fallen on a Jewish holiday: Passover of 2014, Sukkot of 2014, Passover of 2015 and now Sukkot of 2015. A tetrad of blood moons all coinciding with Jewish festivals is extremely rare; only three such tetrads have occurred in the past thousand years. This is the fourth cycle. According to many rabbinic scholars, these tetrads always signify turning points in Jewish history. A prophecy in the Book of Joel states that the coming of the Messiah will be preceded by a blood moon.

Over the course of the current tetrad, Breaking Israel News has done extensive investigations into the Blood Moon phenomenon and its Biblical connections. . Find out everything you need to know about blood moons with Breaking Israel News blood moon articles and videos.

Cosmic Butterfly

A new image from the Hubble Telescope of an amazing cosmic butterfly (twin jet nebula).

The Twin Jet Nebula, or PN M2-9, is a striking example of a bipolar planetary nebula. Bipolar planetary nebulae are formed when the central object is not a single star, but a binary system, Studies have shown that the nebula’s size increases with time, and measurements of this rate of increase suggest that the stellar outburst that formed the lobes occurred just 1200 years ago.

The latest image looks a bit like a cosmic butterfly. The glowing and expanding shells of gas clearly visible in this image actually represent the final stages of life for an old star of low to intermediate mass. Not only has the star ejected its outer layers, but the exposed remnant core is now illuminating these layers, resulting in a spectacular light show.

What’s interesting about this nebula is that it’s a bipolar nebula. Ordinary planetary nebulae have one star at their center. Bipolar nebulae, though, have two in a binary star system. Astronomers have found that the two stars in this pair each have around the same mass as the sun, ranging from .6 to 1.0 solar masses for the smaller star, and from 1.0 to 1.4 solar masses for its larger companion. The larger star is approaching the end of its days, and has already ejected its outer layers of gas into space, whereas its partner is further evolved, and is a small white dwarf. ScienceWorldReport

NASA: The Dark Side Of The Moon

From a million miles away a NASA animation “shows the fully illuminated “dark side” of the moon that is never visible from Earth.”

A NASA camera aboard the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) satellite captured a unique view of the moon as it moved in front of the sunlit side of Earth last month. The series of test images shows the fully illuminated “dark side” of the moon that is never visible from Earth.

The images were captured by NASA’s Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC), a four megapixel CCD camera and telescope on the DSCOVR satellite orbiting 1 million miles from Earth. From its position between the sun and Earth, DSCOVR conducts its primary mission of real-time solar wind monitoring for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

EPIC maintains a constant view of the fully illuminated Earth as it rotates, providing scientific observations of ozone, vegetation, cloud height and aerosols in the atmosphere. Once EPIC begins regular observations next month, the camera will provide a series of Earth images allowing study of daily variations over the entire globe. About twice a year the camera will capture the moon and Earth together as the orbit of DSCOVR crosses the orbital plane of the moon.

These images were taken between 3:50 p.m. and 8:45 p.m. EDT on July 16, showing the moon moving over the Pacific Ocean near North America. The North Pole is in the upper left corner of the image, reflecting the orbital tilt of Earth from the vantage point of the spacecraft. NASA

The celestial spectacle can be observed from large parts of  North America, Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and South West Asia.  The area where the total eclipse can be observed lies within a wide corridor across the Northern Atlantic, North Sea and Norwegian Sea.  The only populated places where the total solar eclipse can bee seen are the Faroe Islands and the Svalbard Islands (between Norway and the North Pole).

Europe will experience Earth’s biggest solar eclipse since 1999 and it could cause some real disruption due to Europe’s reliance on solar energy. Continue reading March 20: Total Solar Eclipse And Supermoon
